Introduction

Welcome to That’s a Rap! - A Music Industry Source-book for Generation Next! What is “Generation Next” you might ask? Well, I see it as the opposite of what some people call “Generation X”, or the so-called lost group of young people being raised in today’s fast paced society. The problems kids face nowadays at an early age are well known – drugs are everywhere, violence is widespread, crime is rising, most urban families are lead by women with no male authority figure, reading levels are on the way down, general morality is declining, and the list goes on.

Some people say that today’s youth, living in a culture defined by hip-hop and rock music, are trapped in a vicious cycle of underachievement and hopelessness. However, I see this situation differently where Generation “X” is actually Generation “Next” and destined to inherit the earth, regardless of whether or not we think they are ready. The bottom line is that more adults need to look beyond the musical tastes, dreadlocks, tattoos and wardrobes to respect the ability and potential of our youth, and feed that potential with books like these that interest and inspire them.

On the other hand, young people need to recognize their own great potential, and work harder to get proper education so that they can compete in this ever changing technology driven world. To help in this cause, this book is written to help teach middle and high school students about the many careers and occupations in the music industry, most of which require no musical ability. It also encourages them to use the media to their advantage by writing and recording positive songs to encourage their peers and improve their communities.
